Dolphin Pool Cleaner FAQs
Does a Dolphin Pool Cleaner "Learn" My Pool?
Not exactly. A Dolphin pool cleaner does not remember your pool layout. Instead, it starts fresh each cleaning cycle by using built-in gyroscopes and smart navigation software to scan and map your pool.
Can I Leave My Dolphin Pool Cleaner in the Pool?
We do not recommend leaving your Dolphin in the pool all the time. Prolonged exposure to pool chemicals, especially chlorine, can shorten the life of the cleaner.
Most pools only need cleaning 2–4 times per week, with each cycle lasting about 2–3 hours.
-
3 cleanings per week x 3 hours: About 9 hours of chemical exposure
-
Left in the pool all week: About 168 hours of chemical exposure
That extra exposure can break down plastics, seals, cables, and internal parts over time.
Expected Lifespan
-
Left in the pool continuously: 1–3 years
-
Removed after each use: 5–7 years or more
The weekly scheduler is best used when you are away from home, not as a reason to leave the cleaner in the pool full-time.
What Water Chemistry Is Safe for a Dolphin?
For best performance and longer cleaner life, keep your pool within these recommended levels:
-
Free Chlorine: Maximum 4 ppm
-
pH: 7.0–7.8
-
Water Temperature: 43°F–95°F / 6°C–35°C
-
Salt: Maximum 5,000 ppm
Important: Do not run your Dolphin immediately after shocking your pool. Chlorine levels are usually too high and can damage the cleaner.
Why Does My Dolphin Cable Get Tangled?
Even models with anti-tangle swivels can develop twists if the cable is not cared for properly.
After each cleaning cycle:
- Disconnect the cable from the power supply.
- Coil it neatly by hand, the same way it came in the box.
This releases twisting pressure, helps the cable keep its proper shape, and reduces tangling.
If the cable becomes sticky, chalky, or white, it may be a sign of too much chemical exposure.
What does the warranty cover?
- Covers parts
- Covers labor
- Usually does not cover shipping
Because we stock many replacement parts in-house, we can often complete repairs faster than waiting for parts from the manufacturer.
What Is the Difference Between Ultra Fine Filters and Nano Filters?
There is no difference. "Nano Filters" is a marketing term used by some sellers. Maytronics calls them Ultra Fine Filters.
The same applies to terms like "MaxBin." Some sellers use this wording to make it sound like the basket is larger, but it is the same basket used in comparable Dolphin models.
Can I Use an Extension Cord?
Maytronics recommends not using an extension cord. Extension cords can cause voltage drops, reduce performance, damage the power supply over time, and create safety risks.
If you must use one, choose the shortest heavy-duty outdoor-rated cord possible.
How Long Does a Dolphin Pool Cleaner Last?
Cleaner lifespan depends heavily on how it is cared for.
-
Left in the pool continuously: 2–3 years
-
Removed after each use: 5–7 years
-
Properly maintained: 10+ years is possible
The biggest factor is unnecessary exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals.

Which Dolphin Pool Cleaner Is Best for My Pool?
To find the right model, ask yourself:
- How large is my pool?
- How deep is it?
- Do I want a top-load basket or cartridge filters?
- Do I want a 2-year or 3-year warranty?
- What is my budget?
- Do I want support from a store that actually services these cleaners?
Larger pools often benefit from 3-motor models because they clean more efficiently and usually require fewer cycles.
Corded vs. Cordless Dolphin Pool Cleaners
Today, corded cleaners still offer the best overall performance for most homeowners.
Corded Cleaner Benefits
- Stronger cleaning power
- Longer run times
- No battery charging
- Better for larger pools
- More consistent cleaning
Cordless Cleaner Benefits
- No cable
- Easy to place in the pool
Cordless Trade-Offs
- Limited battery life
- Long charging times
- Heavier cleaner
- Weaker suction
- Better suited for smaller pools
For most medium to large in-ground pools, we recommend a corded Dolphin cleaner for the best cleaning performance and long-term value.
